Laser is the Permanent Hair Reduction recommended for dark hair and large areas.

Why should I choose laser over electrolysis?

Laser is a quick and effective method to permanently reduce and remove unwanted hair, especially on larger areas of the body such as the legs, back, bikini area and underarms. Though a larger area can be treated with this method, the laser only targets the melanin, meaning those with lighter colored hair may not be the best candidate for the laser treatment.

How does laser work?

A gentle beam of light is emitted and passes through the skin to the hair follicle and is absorbed by the follicle (which is underneath the skin’s surface) and disables it. The laser destroys the follicle with the heat that it generates. The destroyed hairs are either dissolved within the skin or rejected by the body (fall out or slough off) within 7-10 days. Unlike other methods that focus on removing individual hairs, laser treatments quickly treat a larger area of hair at one time.

Is laser permanent?

Results will vary depending on the skin and hair type. It is approximately 80-90% effective for permanent hair removal, and for hair that does return, it is lighter and softer. One must remember that the laser targets the melanin, therefore it works best on darker hair as opposed to the lighter hair.

Is laser painful?

There is some discomfort with the laser treatments, but that depends on the area being worked, the amount of hair in that area, and the tolerance of the individual. There is a pinch sensation when the hair root is being treated and destroyed. Many compare the feeling to the snap of a rubber band where others feel a slight stinging sensation as the laser passes over the area and the laser pulses are applied. Most say it is much less painful than waxing.

How many laser treatments are necessary?

Several things affect the number of treatments that will be needed for each individual. Since the laser is most effective while the hair is still in the growth cycle (Anagen phase) and not all hairs are in the same growing stage, not all of the hair follicles will become impaired during the first few treatments. This means that for an individual to achieve the desired results of permanent hair removal, it can take anywhere from 5-8 treatments. Some have been known to have quicker results in less treatments, but that depends on the area being treated, the density of your hair, the growth cycle, age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism.

How long does each laser session take?

The length of time depends on the area being treated and the density of the hair in that area. Treatment time for the laser compared to electrolysis can be less than half the time to treat, and return visits are a 4-6 weeks as opposed to a few days to a week. The preparation for the laser usually takes longer than the treatment itself. For example, if one was getting electrolysis on the upper lip once a week for 30 minutes, they would now be coming once every 4-6 weeks for about 10 minutes total with the laser treatment (about 5 min. for preparation and 5 min. for treatment).

Are there any side effects to laser treatments?

After a laser treatment you will notice a slight reddening of the skin (like a mild sunburn) that will dissipate anywhere between a few hours to a few days depending on the area treated and the skins sensitivity. A cold compress and aloe vera gel is applied after each session to help with the redness and any discomfort after the treatment.
